Agatha Christie’s hometown in Devon has entered into an agreement to partner with the birthplace of her famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.

A murder mystery writer from the Golden Age was born on the ‘English Riviera’ in Torbay, southwestern England, on September 15, 1890.

In the 100th anniversary year of the novel *The Murder of Roger Ackroyd*, which made Poirot Christie’s most iconic character, the fictional Belgian detective’s birthplace of Spa is being linked with Christie’s own Devon hometown.

This year also signifies 50 years since the writer’s death. The partnership aims to honor the distinct literary and cultural connections between the two places through one of fiction’s most lasting detectives.

Poirot’s origin was initially disclosed in Christie’s 1927 book The Big Four, and in her autobiography released in 1977, she mentioned her experiences as a nurse during theFirst World WarBelgian refugees in Torquay provided inspiration for Poirot.

Both Torbay and Spa serve as locations for heritage tourism.

Torbay, which includes the seaside communities of Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham, is recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, whereas Spa, located in the Ardennes area of eastern Belgium, is among the UNESCO-listed Great Spa Towns of Europe.

It signifies the first instance of two towns joining together for both areas, which were prominent throughout Christie’s writings.

In her book The Big Four, Poirot and Hastings are located in a villa near the town of Spa in Wallonia, within the Liège province, which many readers see as Poirot’s family residence.

The partnership idea was initially discussed during talks between Agatha Christie Limited and June’s Journey, the widely loved mystery mobile game created by Wooga, which this year introduced Hercule Poirot into the game’s universe as part of a special anniversary event.

After this month’s declaration of the plan to establish a twin relationship, officials from Spa will visit Torquay during the Agatha Christie Festival in September, where city leaders from both communities will officially mark the twinning with a unique signing event.

The great-grandson of Agatha Christie and head of Agatha Christie Limited, James Prichard, stated: ‘There is a lot of mystery surrounding Hercule Poirot’s family and early life in Belgium, especially regarding where he was born and spent his childhood.’

Spa certainly has a role in his life story, and connecting it with Torbay in this manner seems a suitable tribute to the renowned Belgian detective.

Councillor Jackie Thomas, the member of the Cabinet responsible for Tourism & Culture at Torbay Council, stated: ‘Hercule Poirot is a fictional figure, yet his narrative has established a genuine link between Torbay and Spa.’

Agatha Christie found inspiration in Belgian refugees she met in Torquay during World War I, which later helped her develop one of the most cherished characters in literature.

A hundred years after The Murder of Roger Ackroyd made Poirot a worldwide sensation, it is appropriate that his legacy should aid in uniting our communities.

This effort underscores the lasting global popularity of Agatha Christie’s writings and shows how books can keep connecting different groups of people.
