The wealthy individual behind the world’s topAIChip has received a £483 million divorce settlement following the birth of an extramarital child.

In local media, this was referred to as the divorce of the century, where billionaire Chey Tae-won became involved in a major legal dispute with Roh Soh-yeong, his wife of 35 years and daughter of a former South Korean president.

The core of the dispute involved Mr. Chey’s ownership in the SK Group, which has significantly increased in value due to its microchips being utilized by the leading AI company Nvidia.

The couple tied the knot in 1988 during a ceremony held at the presidential palace in Seoul, where the bride’s father, Roh Tae-woo, had been the leader of the nation from 1988 until 1993.

However, in 2015, Mr. Chey confessed to having a child with a lover, leading to the end of their marriage. Mr. Chey initiated divorce proceedings in 2018.

The legal dispute regarding funds finally began in earnest after five years.

The stock price of SK has tripled since 2015.

The Seoul High Court decided yesterday that Ms. Roh, 65, was eligible for a cash payment equivalent to one-third of the couple’s shared assets – £483 million.

But Mr. Chey, who is also 65, might see it as a win – following a 2024 court decision that required him to pay his ex-partner £700 million.

Either party has the right to challenge the most recent decision.

In June 2024, it was announced thatMr. Chey was required to pay $1 billion to his separated wife following his infidelity.– the biggest divorce settlement the country has ever witnessed.

The appeal judges in Seoul increased the amount of money Chey Tae-won, head of the SK Group, must pay to Roh So-yeong, daughter of a former president, by more than double.

The duo, both aged 63, first met as students at the University ofChicagoand tied the knot in 1988, and they have a son and two daughters.

They initiated divorce processes in 2017, two years following Chey’s disclosure that he had a child outside of their marriage with another woman.

The court decided that the business leader’s marriage into the family of the late president Roh Tae-woo, who governedSouth Koreafrom 1988 until 1993, it proved advantageous for him and his company, the second biggest in South Korea followingSamsung.
