Team EnglandGymnast Gabriel Langton was taken away on a stretcher following a shocking fall during the Commonwealth Games on Friday.
Langton, who served as a last-minute substitute for several Olympic medal winnersMax Whitlock, fell off the high bar after failing to grasp it during his routine and landed on his head.
The event was postponed as the 18-year-old received medical attention, after which he was placed in a neck collar and transported out of the venue on a stretcher.
Whitlock, who was unable to participate in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow because of a hand injury, witnessed Langton’s fall as he was involved inTNT Sports‘ team reporting on the event
“We’ve heard… it’s not official yet, but we saw him moving his arms and legs. It was a terrible fall on the high bar,” Whitlock said.
Both hands left the bar, an uncommon occurrence in such a skill, and then he fell onto his head from that height. It was not pleasant to watch, nor was it pleasant to be in the arena, as the atmosphere noticeably dropped. It’s one of those moments that, when they occur in any competition or sport, completely alters the mood. It brings a lot into perspective.
Everyone is hurrying towards these outcomes and these awards, but it brings you back to reality and you understand that everyone is just a person striving to do their best. Everyone’s thoughts are with him, and I believe he is in capable hands.
England placed second, following Canada, in the men’s team final, whereas Australia secured third position.
Joshua Nathan, a teammate of Langton’s in England, commented following his silver medal victory: ‘It’s truly difficult to express. Today has been quite a wild journey.’
Initially, our thoughts are with Gabriel following the incident on the high bar. However, the way this team united was remarkable. I am incredibly proud of the boys.
Luke Whitehouse, who was also a member of the England gymnastics team, stated: ‘It was extremely challenging.
We simply needed to restart, mentally set it aside, and concentrate on the task at hand. I believe everyone should feel proud of how we continued following Gabe’s accident.
A representative from Team England stated, “Gabriel Langton of Team England experienced a fall during tonight’s Artistic Gymnastics Men’s Individual Qualification and Team Final event. We appreciate the prompt assistance provided by the medical staff.”
