On July 25 (Korean time), U.S. ESPN and other international media outlets simultaneously announced that James has signed a two-year deal worth $8 million (about 11.7 billion South Korean won) with the Philadelphia 76ers.

James, who made his NBA debut in 2003 while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, is well-known as the league’s premier star. He has earned 22 All-Star nods, four regular-season MVP awards, and four Finals MVP honors, and is regarded as one of the all-time greats in basketball. As the oldest player currently active in the NBA, entering his 24th season, he maintains career averages of 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists.

This marks James’ fourth team in the NBA. He has previously been with the Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and LA Lakers. James has secured championships with each team he has been a part of. The 76ers, who have an elite lineup featuring Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown, selected James as the key addition to end a 40-year championship wait that began in 1983.

James shared on his social media, “I believe I can guide the 76ers to a championship,” and continued, “Honestly, I considered retiring after last season, but I still have a passion for basketball. I still want to compete.” Even though he is over 40 and no longer at his peak, James became a highly desirable free agent this off-season, with several teams such as the 76ers, Cavaliers, and Heat vying for his signature. To entice James, who enjoys golf, local golf courses in Philadelphia and other regions even provided free memberships and professional golf instruction.

James made $53 million (about 77.5 billion South Korean won) in the previous season, but this year he is anticipated to get the lowest salary of $4 million. James mentioned, “I didn’t join the 76ers for the money. It’s not for my family either,” and shared his goal, “I came here to have the chance to win.”
