President Lee Jae Myung, currently in San Francisco, United States, met with leading global technology executives from the international artificial intelligence (AI) sector on the 24th (local time).
When the president arrived in San Francisco that morning, he had back-to-back meetings with Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic; Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI; Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA; and Hok Tan, the CEO of Broadcom.
Having a meeting with CEO Jensen Huang, President Lee stated, “The world is on the brink of a major transformation, and you are leading the way. Our government has initiated three large-scale projects and is getting ready for a new society and country focused on AI. I hope you will keep making a vital contribution.”
CEO Jensen Huang, who traveled to South Korea last year to meet President Lee and took part in the ‘Kkanbu meeting’ with business executives, stated, “The energy I experienced in South Korea, from fried chicken to samgyeopsal, was truly impressive.” Huang further remarked, “The concept of an ‘AI-native country’ introduced by President Lee is inspiring for South Korea. Under the president’s guidance, Korea has made significant progress over the past year. It’s accurate to describe this period as a golden age for South Korea.”
President Lee replied to Huang’s reference to a ‘golden age,’ stating, “That’s a very precise portrayal, and we are only beginning the initial phases of this period. I hope you will take on an even more significant role in the future.”
CEO Huang said, “We have announced several significant developments with different South Korean partners,” including semiconductor collaborations with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. He added, “SK Group and NVIDIA intend to reveal a business alliance valued at 500 billion dollars. We will also invest heavily in Naver and work with Hyundai Motor Group to create autonomous Genesis vehicles.”
Huang stated, “NVIDIA’s top AI experts will move from California to South Korea. We intend to work with KAIST to create ‘Korea AI’ and establish a ‘Korean LLM (Large Language Model)’ for the nation.”
A meeting with CEO Sam Altman, President Lee stated, “Thanks to you, I am now using ChatGPT in a careful and efficient manner.” Altman replied, “Seeing the efforts of the South Korean government in AI, I can say that South Korea is one of the most significant countries in this area.”
President Lee also asked the chief executives of Anthropic and Broadcom to support South Korea’s efforts to become a top nation in artificial intelligence.
CEO Amodei stated, “We are collaborating with South Korean firms across various fields, and our hopes are significant. Partnering with Korea is genuinely thrilling.” CEO Tan also highlighted the strength of Korean AI startups, noting, “We are happy to support Korea’s independent AI efforts through Broadcom.”
