President Lee Jae Myung, who is currently in San Francisco, introduced the ‘San Francisco AI Declaration’ on the 24th (local time), saying, “South Korea will position itself as a crucial participant in the indispensable global AI supply chain.” He further mentioned, “By utilizing our top-tier memory semiconductor strengths and manufacturing capabilities, we aim to become a reliable AI semiconductor production hub and supply chain collaborator.”
The president delivered this statement at the ‘San Francisco AI Summit’ hosted at a local hotel. He highlighted that with the semiconductor technological strength and significant manufacturing capabilities of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, “We will ensure global companies can consistently develop AI infrastructure and keep advancing technology regardless of the situation.” Citing the ‘Three Mega Projects’ valued at 4,700 trillion Korean won announced last month, he said, “This represents a national-level initiative to stabilize the supply chain and maintain semiconductor production during any crisis, showcasing South Korea’s responsible investment to avoid global semiconductor shortages.”
President Lee stated, “We will create a top-tier AI center that consistently provides essential infrastructure required by the global AI community,” and promised to grow the AI market so that people from more nations can engage in AI innovation prospects.
He stated, “In addition to supply, the Republic of Korea will emerge as a country that adopts and applies AI at the quickest pace and with the highest efficiency, fostering new markets for worldwide expansion.” He further explained, “Artificial intelligence will go beyond research laboratories and online environments to evolve into a global AI testing ground and production system, functioning within manufacturing facilities, urban areas, and logistics centers.”
President Lee also presented the idea of an ‘AI basic society,’ where AI technology is accessible to everyone, regardless of nationality or social background, offering fresh opportunities for all. He mentioned, “In the age of AI, the Republic of Korea will guarantee all citizens stronger protections for fundamental rights like education and healthcare, and build a society where no one—be it small businesses, independent workers, or disadvantaged groups—is overlooked. We refer to this as an ‘AI basic society.’”
He revealed intentions to initiate the “AI for All” initiative, which will include 50 million people, by the end of this year. By extensively integrating AI into public services—everyday life, administration, social welfare, and education—he seeks to “create the most vibrant AI market in the world.”
In his address, President Lee quoted the well-known lines from the internationally recognized American TV show *Friends*: “I’ll be there for you. Cause you’re there for me too,” and encouraged, “Let us collectively create a future of AI that benefits everyone.”
More than 150 international leaders participated in the summit, such as Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA; Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI; Lee Jae-yong, President of Samsung Electronics; Chey Tae-won, President of SK Group; Chung Eui-sun, President of Hyundai Motor Group; and Lee Hae-jin, President of Naver.
Before the summit, President Lee met individually with these global technology executives. In the AI declaration, he mentioned, “Our goal is to share with the world the large-scale AI investment plans that the Republic of Korea and leading global companies, whose total market value surpasses 2 quadrillion won, have prepared over time.”
