Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed on Thursday his backing for implementing border checks inside the Schengen Area with Spain, in response to the recent increase in unauthorized migrants arriving at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Tajani stated that the recent events in Ceuta highlight what he referred to as the outcomes of Spain’s immigration policies.

“The pictures from Ceuta reveal how deeply mistaken the Madrid administration’s choice to provide Spanish, and thus European, citizenship to over 500,000 undocumented immigrants is, and how it promotes human trafficking,” he stated.

Following the biggest migration surge in Ceuta since May 2021, thousands of individuals, primarily Moroccan citizens, tried to enter the enclave by swimming around the Tarajal seawall or crossing close to the border fence. The group included women, children, and minors traveling without adult supervision.

According to Schengen regulations, member countries can temporarily reestablish internal border checks in extraordinary situations, like significant risks to public safety or major migration flows. Tajani did not clarify if he was advocating for a temporary action or a more extensive halt to free movement with Spain.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez mentioned that Madrid and Rabat are collaborating to bring back normal conditions, while Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska is set to visit Ceuta on Friday to monitor the government’s actions on the ground.
