TOKYO – Twelve individuals sustained minor injuries when a fire occurred at an apartment complex in Koganei, western Tokyo, on Monday evening, according to local officials.
The injured ranged in age from 1 to 80 years old, and all were thought to be occupants of the 13-floor building. Five individuals were transported to the hospital following reports of symptoms including sore throat.
The Tokyo Fire Department reported that approximately 200 square meters of a ground-floor storage space was damaged in the fire. The building was being renovated, including work on its exterior, as stated by the police, and it is probable that construction materials were stored in the area.
A call about the fire was placed around 10:50 p.m. on Monday. Authorities are looking into what caused the fire.
An elderly woman in her 70s mentioned that she awoke to a fire alarm notification and descended the stairs to evacuate. “I was taken aback by a fire during the night and concerned about what would occur,” she shared.
The structure is situated approximately 400 meters to the east of JR Musashi-Koganei Station, within a residential area.
