The leading narrow-body airliner makes its international debut, while a regional jet secures a record order, and efforts are underway to accelerate the development of wide-body and domestic jet engine projects.
With its initial international route set to begin this month, the first flight of a high-altitude version recently finished, and approval from European test pilots, China’s leading C919 aircraft is reaching new levels.
China’s aspiration to develop a homegrown civil aviation fleet that can compete with Boeing and Airbus is becoming more achievable, thanks to a national initiative aimed at accelerating the certification of a domestically developed jet engine and streamlining the process.the creation of a wide-body C929 aircraft, and combined orders exceeding 1,200 for the C909 regional jet and the narrowbody C919.
If Chinese aviation firms meet the targets outlined in the most recent five-year plan to increase the production of commercial airplanes and enhance supply chains, they may capitalize on the extended waiting period for aircraft deliveries from the existing market leaders to capture a larger portion of the market.

Why is traveling to Mongolia considered significant?
When a C919 aircraft, operated by the national carrier Air China, departs from Beijing Capital International Airportbound for UlaanbaatarIn Mongolia, on August 12, a significant event will take place. Up until now, the 41 C919 aircraft operated by China’s three main airlines have only been used on domestic flights, including those to and from Hong Kong.
Frequent travel to and from a foreign location serves as an evaluation of its capacity to function outside the domestic market and contributes to building trust for its broader global operations.
Manufactured, similar to the C909, by the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac), the single-aisle aircraft is seen as China’s response to the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 jet series. However, only one C919 model had been airborne until July 29, when Comac successfully completedthe first flight of a high-altitude version of the C919.
Built for airports located on the high-altitude plateaus of western China and comparable areas around the world, the latest aircraft features a shorter body and enhanced onboard systems to address the performance issues caused by the thinner air in these regions. It will accommodate 140 to 160 passengers, while the standard C919 can hold 158 to 192 travelers.
A longer variant capable of accommodating as many as 240 travelers,being developed in partnership with China Eastern Airlines,is anticipated to commence commercial operations by 2030, according to reports from the South China Morning Post.
During the 119-minute high-altitude flight of the C919, which took off from Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport, engineers effectively tested the aircraft against all intended examination points, according to Comac based in Shanghai.
Plateau routes in China primarily use Airbus A319 planes and Boeing 737-700 high-weight versions, according to China Daily. Several of these aircraft are outdated, and new models are not being manufactured in significant quantities, analysts mentioned to the newspaper.
Comac is working on the high-altitude version in collaboration with Tibet Airlines, which has placed an order for 40 high-altitude C919 aircraft.
The single-aisle aircraft would supplement the smaller C909s currently operating on high-altitude routes in western China –including the Xinjiang region, where 30 are currently operational– Guo Jia, a civil aviation specialist, stated to China Daily.
Where do Comac’s regional jets operate?
The C909 regional jet has been in operation for over a decade, with more than 180 units currently in service within the country and Southeast Asia, including with several airlines.TransNusa in Indonesia and Lao Airlinesin Laos. Vietnamese airline VietJethas agreed to leaseup to 10 aircraft.
Operated in China by airlines such as Chengdu Airlines, which is backed by Comac.applies it on overseas flights, the C909’s seating capacity ranging from 78 to 97 passengers makes it a budget-friendly choice for less busy and developing routes. Previously known as the ARJ21, it has transported over 24 million passengers since 2016.
Comac recently entered into an agreement with Air Cambodia for 20 C909 aircraft, marking the largest purchase to date for the regional jet.
So far, Comac has attracted attention for the C919 from a number of international airlines, all based in Asia, but no commitments have been made yet. These includelow-cost carrier AirAsia, Kazakhstan’s SCAT Airlines, Cambodia Angkor Air, Garuda Indonesia, Malaysia’s AirBorneo, and Brunei’s GallopAir, as reported by aviation news site Simple Flying. Safety approvals from Western authorities might assist in obtaining export contracts, including fromMalaysia Airlines.
Pilots from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) who have been conducting flight tests of the aircraft in China since Januaryhad discovered “no significant hardware risks”, sources revealed to the SCMP in July. After these tests conclude, only one step will be left in the EASA certification procedure. Nevertheless, the agency’s executive director previously mentioned to a French magazine that this could takethree to six more years.
The single-aisle aircraft is undergoing a critical maintenance period, with planes being gradually taken out of service for thorough checks, three years since the C919’s first commercial flight. The results ofthese safety-focused “C-checks”are anticipated to assist in persuading EASA about the type’s sustained airworthiness.
Will the production of commercial aircraft be increased?
An aviation market intelligence firm, IBA, predicts that by 2030, Comac will be capable of increasing its yearly production by more than three times, reaching approximately 145 planes annually, primarily the C919 model. As reported by the industry news platform ch-aviation, in June, Comac had commitments for 801 C919s and 410 C909s.
China’s 15th five-year planspanning from 2026 to 2030demands higher rates of airplane manufacturing, the enhancement of supply chains, the intensification of initiatives to overcome technological challenges in creating a widebody aircraft and for speeding up the certification and application of a large domestically produced jet engine, the CJ-1000 being developed by a Shanghai-based companyChina Aero Engine Corporation for the C919.
Comac currently equips C919 aircraft with Leap-1C engines produced by CFM International, a collaboration between GE Aerospace from the United States and Safran from France. Engine supplies were halted for a portion of the previous year due to the U.S.-China trade conflict, resulting in Comac delivering just 15 C919s in 2025, significantly below its goal of 75. Additionally, it finalized the production of 26 C909 units.
This year the company is anticipated to provide a minimum of 28 C919s, IBA analyst Dan Taylor told the SCMP. Nevertheless, only 10 were delivered from January to July.
The disruption in engine supply highlighted the importance of the CJ-1000, Brian Yang Bo, an experienced aviation advisor, mentioned to the SCMP. It was intended as a secondary option to ensure manufacturing, not as an alternative to the sophisticated Leap engine, he noted.
The certification of the CJ-1000 could be imminent, with a C919 aircraft fitted with this engine anticipated to start service by 2029, Yang mentioned.
Comac is re-evaluating its reliance on external providers, a source working for the aircraft manufacturer told the SCMP. Although it acquires most of the C919’s fuselage parts locally, it depends on Western suppliers for key components such as the engines and avionics – the electronic systems pilots use to operate and navigate the aircraft.
How is the progress of the widebody project?
Comac anticipates the C929 – its response to the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 – to becertified in China by 2032 and operating commercially by 2035, according to international partners who were informed about the planemaker’s plans at last year’s Paris Air Show. Prototype models are currently being developed. Analysts mentioned to the SCMP that recent progress could indicate a faster certification process and an earlier launch date for the C929’s maiden flight.
The aircraft manufacturer recently entered into an agreement with Aviage Systems for collaborative efforts.on electronics for the C929 widebody.Aviation Systems, a partnership between GE Aerospace and a Beijing-based companyChina Aviation Industry Corporation, already provides avionics for the C919.
The large aircraft can accommodate as many as 440 passengers and boasts a maximum range of 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles), approximately the distance between Shanghai and New York. Comac has yet to reveal which engines will be used for the plane.
What other items are available?
Besides manufacturing regional and narrowbody aircraft and advancing the widebody C929, Comac has increased its efforts in promotingits first business jetas it aims to capture a portion of a market controlled by Western aircraft manufacturers Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, and Gulfstream Aerospace.
It displayed a completed version of the model, known as the Comac Business Jet, or CBJ, at an event in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou in October.
The CBJ is based on the C909 and was granted type certification—approval of its design and airworthiness—by the Civil Aviation Administration of China in 2021.
The manufacturing of business jets may require several years, as every aircraft is custom-built for a particular customer, according to David Dixon, president of Jetcraft Asia based in Hong Kong. He also pointed out a challenge in selling these planes within China – the nation currently does not have the secondary airports that are conducive to business jets, which are available in other regions globally.
