From April to May, a simulated conflict took place at a German military training site, where the U.S. Army Armored Brigade, considered the peak of traditional military might, clashed with Ukraine’s drone unit. The outcome revealed that the U.S. military, frequently referred to as the “imperial army” due to its immense power, experienced a loss, with its forces declared destroyed.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 13th, the exercise was part of the “Combined Resolve” training. The U.S. holds this training twice a year in Germany to get ready for major land-based combat situations. Approximately 3,500 soldiers from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team of the U.S. Army’s 1st Cavalry Division were assigned to assault the defensive positions of a simulated enemy force (OPFOR). The OPFOR mainly consisted of drone operators from Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Corps 412th Regiment, referred to as “Nemesis (Nemesis·Divine Retribution).”

The United States sent its primary M1A2 Abrams tanks and M2 Bradley armored vehicles to the frontline, backed by helicopters and drones equipped with anti-drone systems. Nevertheless, when Ukrainian surveillance drones identified the armored columns advancing, creating clouds of dust, waves of attack drones initiated attacks. These featured suicide drones, controlled from a first-person viewpoint, that repeatedly targeted and “destroyed” vehicles by hovering above them—despite no real explosions taking place.

With most tanks and armored vehicles considered destroyed and taken out of the exercise, the Armored Brigade was wiped out. A U.S. military source informed the WSJ that the rapid rate at which the tanks were “destroyed” compelled them to “respawn” the vehicles in order to keep the training going.

The Wall Street Journal stated, “The exercise revealed the susceptibility of U.S. armored units to drone strikes while on the move.” It is true that U.S. troops have encountered difficulties due to Iranian drone attacks in the Middle East. Elliot Cohen from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) commented that the exercise emphasized the essential role of drones in contemporary combat, noting, “It is vital for the U.S. military to become proficient in this area, but it appears they have not achieved that yet.”
