Members of the Pro-Cheong Wa Dae supreme council within the Democratic Party of Korea have openly opposed Representative Kim Min-seok, expressing criticism such as, “How can a proper decision be reached if the list of candidates is suddenly revealed at the general meeting without any prior discussion?” This came after Kim disclosed the names of nominees for appointed supreme council positions during the lawmakers’ general meeting on the 20th, sparking questions about the process.

On that day, Kim stated at the general meeting that he would propose two-term legislator Jeon Yong-gi as a member of the youth supreme council and Kwon Mi-kyung, head of the FKTU Public Solidarity Labor Union Federation, for the labor sector. He further mentioned, “If any party official thinks there are major procedural or substantive concerns, please bring them up during the party executive meeting.”

Kim clarified his choice of appointing the supreme council members, saying, “I just got a report. The finding was that (selecting the youth supreme council member via a selection process) is not feasible. As a new youth committee chairman will soon be chosen, having the same voters and candidates for both the youth committee and the youth supreme council member would lead to major conflicts.”

On the day before, August 19, Senior Supreme Council Member Choi Min-hee advised Kim during a supreme council meeting in Busan, “The pre-convention preparation committee suggested selecting the youth supreme council member through democratic methods. The previous leadership also chose party executives via primaries, so I hope you will consider that.” Nevertheless, Kim went ahead and named the youth supreme council member on his own, without holding a primary.

Choi later shared on Facebook, “I encourage you to adhere to basic protocols. Throughout the national convention period, Representative Kim publicly pledged to select the youth supreme council member via a nomination and to conduct a celebratory primary for the election process.” She further stated, “How can you earn the backing of the 2030 generation if you fail to uphold promises made to them openly?”

Choi also proposed, “As there is going to be an election for the youth committee chairperson, think about making the chairperson an automatic member of the supreme council. Discussion might result in an effective resolution.”

Supreme Council Member Lee Sung-yoon also posted on Facebook, “The party must naturally follow the supreme standard, the party constitution. The party leader is no different,” and requested, “Please appoint them following the Democratic Party’s constitutional procedures.”

Member of the Supreme Council Han Min-su expressed disappointment, saying, “I feel compelled to express my regret regarding the party leader’s violation of commitments and the unilateral declaration. The party leader’s one-sided announcement during the general meeting can only be interpreted as effectively undermining the supreme council.”
