Eight individuals from the same family, with a minimum of two minors, have lost their lives after a shooter targeted their residence and began firing.
The house in Billings, Montana, was then set ablaze – leaving some members of the family trapped inside as the structure collapsed in flames.
Law enforcement reached the scene 10 minutes following the start of the shooting at 6:01 pm on Monday, but they arrived too late to rescue the family.
Among the deceased were Landon and Charlotte Ghekiere, who were 15 and 12 years old, respectively, while their parents Adam Ghekiere and Erica Jarussi Schneider, along with their stepfather Danny, were not present at the location.
A single individual endured the attack and was taken to a medical facility, though their health status remains unclear.
The individual who opened fire was discovered deceased near the residence, having inflicted a gunshot wound to his head at 6:48 PM, according to authorities.
It remains unknown how the shooter was connected to the family.
Interim Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O’Donnell mentioned that gunshots could be heard in the background of a 911 call, and the house caught fire just three minutes later.
The police have recognized the victims, but their names have not been made public yet, except for Landon and Charlotte, who were mentioned by their family.
Chief Matt Hoppel of the Billings Fire Department stated that the firefighters faced difficulties due to the absence of fire hydrants in the vicinity.
“The postponement and restricted access created major difficulties. Fire conditions kept deteriorating, and the house eventually became deeply involved and was engulfed by the flames,” he stated.
The two children were remembered online by relatives and friends of their parents.
“Landon was only 15 years old and getting ready to start his second year at Senior High School,” they stated on an online fundraising page.
He was a kind-hearted, compassionate young man who frequently offered his assistance to his family and community.
He was excited about obtaining his driver’s license this week and served as a patient, caring, and affectionate older brother.
Charlotte was on the verge of beginning her seventh grade when she died together with her brother.
“Amusing, clever, and charming—with a perfect dose of stubbornness—Charlotte had a heavenly smile and enjoyed striking poses for photos,” the fundraiser said.
She had a particular fondness for exploring her surroundings, flipping over stones to search for insects. Oh, how much she cherished her bugs!
