The Supreme Court announced on the 31st that Cho Bu-hwan, the father of Chief Justice Jo Hee-de, passed away the previous day at the age of 93. The funeral hall has been set up at Pohang Sungmo Hospital in North Gyeongsang Province.

Chief Justice Jo is reported to have not reported to the Supreme Court on the day and will instead remain at the funeral hall. A Supreme Court official stated, “Chief Justice Jo wishes to hold the funeral quietly with family members,” and declined external condolences.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hold an urgent questioning session at 2 p.m. on the same day regarding the Chief Justice’s written nomination of judicial candidates. Administrator-General Noh Gyeong-pil of the National Court Administration is expected to attend the session.

The committee had previously summoned Chief Justice Jo as a witness. However, Chief Justice Jo submitted an opinion letter on August 28 stating, “Requiring the Chief Justice to testify in the National Assembly regarding the exercise of the constitutional authority to nominate candidates contradicts the separation of powers and judicial independence,” expressing his intention not to attend.
