Busan, selected as the ‘2028 World Design Capital (WDC)’, will promote the city’s design policies and urban appeal in Taiwan.
The Busan Metropolitan Government announced on the 10th that it will operate the ‘WDC BUSAN 2028 Busan Pavilion’ at the Taiwan Design Museum within the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei, Taiwan, until November 8. Established in 2011, the Taiwan Design Museum is the first museum in the Chinese-speaking world to focus on design as its core exhibition theme.
The Busan Pavilion was prepared to showcase Busan’s design vision, culture, tourism, and industry, which have been harmoniously integrated since the city was selected as the 2028 World Design Capital.
The exhibition’s theme at the Busan Pavilion is ‘Busan Vibe: Wave.’ Using the waves of Busan’s sea as a motif, it expresses the 2028 WDC Busan theme, ‘A City Embracing All, Design Created Together.’
Since Taipei, Taiwan, was selected as the World Design Capital in 2017, it has seen an increase in tourists and a rise in urban competitiveness.
The city plans to leverage its cooperative network with the Taiwan Design Research Institute to promote Busan internationally through the operation of the Busan Pavilion.
Busan Mayor Chun Jae-soo stated, “Through this exhibition, we will expand exchanges and cooperation with global design cities, including Taiwan,” adding, “We will widely promote Busan’s design capabilities and urban vision to successfully prepare for the 2028 World Design Capital Busan.”
Earlier, Busan was selected as the ‘2028 World Design Capital’ by the World Design Organization in July of last year. This marks the second time a South Korean city has received this designation, following Seoul in 2010.
The World Design Organization, an international organization in the design field, selects a World Design Capital every two years. The initiative aims to solve social issues and drive urban innovation through design. Previous recipients include Turin, Italy; Helsinki, Finland; Valencia, Spain; and Taipei, Taiwan.
