The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has disclosed that approximately 57,000 vehicles are on the verge of being de-registered for being inactive on the system for more than five years.

The inactivity of vehicles on the system signifies a substantial reduction in revenue generation for the Government through the agency, an economist has observed.

Times of Zambia calculations indicate that the Government has lost between K1,43,640,000 and K1,585,740,000 in revenue through unpaid road tax and fitness for the 57,000 vehicles, in the last five years.

According to a RTSA public notice dated September 14, 2026, issued through Head of Public Relations Chilufya Mwelwa, RTSA will commence the de-registration of inactive vehicles from the National Vehicle Register in accordance with the Road Traffic Act.

“The agency has identified approximately 57,000 vehicles that have remained inactive on the system for a period of more than five years. These vehicles have not complied with statutory requirements, including the renewal of Test Certificates or Certificates of Fitness and Road Tax, as applicable,” the notice reads in part.
