A truck plowed into a flea market event in Anseong City, Gyeonggi Province, killing two people and injuring five.

According to police and fire authorities on the 19th, a 1-ton truck carrying used goods crashed into seven people at around 11:18 a.m. that day at the flea market event in front of the Gongdo-eup Community Library in Anseong City. In the accident, a woman in her 40s and a teenage male, who were mother and son, were transported to a hospital in cardiac arrest but died. Additionally, three people—a woman and man in their 20s and a man in his 60s—sustained injuries such as leg fractures, among five who suffered moderate to severe injuries.

The event was the ’2026 Sharing Green Market,’ hosted by Anseong City and organized by the Anseong City Sustainable Development Council. The accident vehicle was owned by Anseong City, and the driver was identified as Mr. A, a 60-year-old fixed-term worker at the city hall.

Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, believing that Mr. A caused the crash while parking the truck on a nearby road to unload goods at the event.

Mr. A initially stated in police questioning, “I mistook the accelerator for the brake,” but later changed his statement to, “The vehicle suddenly accelerated unintentionally.”

Police are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the accident by interviewing Mr. A and witnesses.
