People Power Party floor leader Jeong Jeom-sig stated on the 19th, “If one were to say that Chun Ha-ram, a lawyer in his 40s and a Reform Party lawmaker, ‘lacks social experience,’ would it then be acceptable to entrust a ministerial position to Lee So-young, a Democratic Party of Korea member in her 40s?” Earlier, Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Park Sun-won had remarked during the National Assembly confirmation hearing for Defense Minister nominee Kang Shin-chul on the 16th, “It seems [Chun Ha-ram] does not know because of a lack of social experience.”
Jeong, the floor leader, made this comment targeting Park Sun-won on his Facebook page that morning. He stated, “Mentioning social experience is not even respectful toward fellow lawmakers” and added, “It is the typical attitude of an old fogey who looks down on and disparages those younger than themselves.” He continued, “If one talks about social experience regarding lawmakers in their 40s, it is easy to imagine how much younger people in their 20s and 30s would be disregarded.”
Park’s remarks came as she defended Kang during the hearing when Chun Ha-ram pressed him on allegations of special distribution for falsely registered evictees. At the time, Chun retorted, “Is that something to say to a fellow lawmaker?”
Jeong criticized, “Park’s remarks are the harsh words of an old fogey that reveal how the Democratic Party views the younger generation,” and demanded an apology. He further stated, “If an apology is ultimately refused, the People Power Party will inquire about the intentions of Chun Ha-ram, the affected party, and coordinate with the Reform Party to pursue a filing with the National Assembly Ethics Committee.”
