U.S. President Donald Trump held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil a new helipad at the White House South Lawn on the 21st before departing for New York to attend United Nations General Assembly-related events. However, five major broadcasters, including CNN and Fox News, refused to participate in pool coverage in protest of Trump’s ban on their access to CNN, MS Now (formerly MSNBC), and Politico. As a result, Trump’s voice was inaudible during his nine-minute remarks. While the event was viewable via YouTube channels, his upcoming address to the U.N. General Assembly on the 22nd also became difficult to access through U.S. broadcasts.
The three media outlets banned by Trump—including CNN—announced on the 21st that they had filed a lawsuit with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C., and submitted an emergency motion requesting the restoration of their White House access. In their complaint, they stated, “The Constitution does not permit the president or any other government official to deprive the media of their First Amendment rights, freedoms, and property interests without any notice or process, solely because they dislike the content of the reporting.” Additionally, the White House press pool, which rotates coverage among media outlets to provide content to domestic and international press, suspended its operations. They emphasized, “No government should restrict media outlets simply because it dislikes their reporting.”
In response, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, “Fake news outlets that infringe upon national security by writing only negative articles and creating false and defamatory reports through unidentified ‘sources’ should not be allowed access to the most important office in the world.” He added, “The Oval Office, which should be treated with respect and dignity, must not be tarnished by third-rate clowns who distort, twist, and disparage the truth.” Trump further claimed, “The White House is not attacking the free press I cherish but combating the cancer of fake news that has grown in our beloved America. Corrupt, intentional, pervasive, and systematically organized fake news is a threat to our national security—it must be stopped immediately.”
The White House cited precedents, including the Obama administration’s surveillance of a Fox News reporter and the Biden administration’s blocking of a New York Post journalist’s access, asserting, “Access to the White House is a privilege, not a right.” It also encouraged the use of official social media accounts, stating, “Important news can be accessed without separate noise.” Trump previously faced a lawsuit after banning the Associated Press from the White House in 2023 for not adhering to guidelines to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” Separately, the Department of War is currently facing litigation after requiring journalists to sign affidavits pledging not to report on “unauthorized or controlled information,” leading to access bans for non-compliant media outlets.
