Christian Eriksen, 34 years old, the Danish footballer once hailed as a symbol of “human victory” after overcoming cardiac arrest to return to the pitch, is reportedly set to retire following a recurrence of heart issues that led to his departure from his club.

On the 23rd (Korean time), VfL Wolfsburg of Germany’s 2. Bundesliga announced that they had mutually agreed to terminate Eriksen’s contract. Eriksen exhibited cardiac irregularities during a friendly match against Ukraine with the Danish national team in **last June**. After receiving emergency treatment, he boarded an ambulance on his own.

Eriksen’s heart had previously failed once, five years ago. During a Euro 2020 match against Finland with the national team, he collapsed from cardiac arrest and was sidelined for a period. He later underwent surgery to implant a cardioverter-defibrillator and returned to play in 2022 after persistent rehabilitation, earning him the title of a “human victory” icon.

However, the recent cardiac issues have forced him to step away from professional football. While Eriksen posted on social media (SNS) stating, “I’m fine,” he has not joined the team since his June injury.

Eriksen is familiar to Korean fans as a former teammate of South Korea’s captain Son Heung-min, 34 years old (LAFC). At Tottenham Hotspur, he formed the “DESK line” alongside Son Heung-min, Harry Kane, 33 years old (Bayern Munich), and Dele Alli, 30 years old, and gained fame in the EPL, the English Premier League.
