Gyeongbuk Province has joined hands with global quantum companies and the U.S. state of Maryland to support the global quantum industry entry of local manufacturing firms.
Gyeongbuk Province announced on the 24th that it signed a business agreement with Gumi City, IonQ, and SDT in Maryland (local time) on the 23rd to cooperate in quantum technology and supply chains.
This agreement was prepared to expand the technology and expertise of local companies, accumulated in existing key industries such as semiconductors, electronic components, and advanced materials, into the new market of the quantum industry.
They agreed to explore cooperation possibilities in areas that can leverage Gumi’s manufacturing strengths, including testing, packaging, and assembly of quantum components.
Moving forward, the province will strengthen collaboration between local companies and universities to discover quantum technology-related projects and enhance institutional linkages. Gyeongbuk Province plans to support these projects to ensure they lead to actual business ventures.
Various administrative supports, including the Opportunity Development Special Zone and corporate support systems, will also be provided to back this initiative.
Additionally, Gyeongbuk Province signed a business agreement with Maryland to promote international exchanges in the quantum industry.
Maryland aims to become the capital of the quantum industry and plans to invest over 1 billion dollars in quantum research and development, attracting businesses, and nurturing specialized talent over the next five years.
This agreement is part of Gyeongbuk Province’s plan to foster four major foundries for future industries.
The province is planning to establish advanced manufacturing and production bases in four sectors: robotics in Pohang, semiconductors and quantum in Gumi, and pharmaceuticals in Andong.
Earlier, on the 9th, Gyeongbuk Province and Pohang City signed an agreement to establish a robotics foundry.
Yang Geum-hee, Gyeongbuk Vice Governor for Economic Affairs, stated, “The industrialization of quantum technology requires a manufacturing base and a stable supply chain,” and added, “We will combine Maryland’s excellent research and technology with Gyeongbuk’s manufacturing capabilities to support local companies’ entry into the global quantum industry.”
