The film “The Assassin(s),” embroiled in controversy over historical distortion, has fallen to second place at the box office. The movie “Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub” unexpectedly claimed the top spot.
According to the Integrated Computer Network for Movie Theater Admissions on the 29th, “The Assassin(s),” which had maintained first place since its release on the 23rd, dropped to second with 67,407 daily viewers (cumulative 1.6336 million viewers) on the 28th. “Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub,” released on the same day, rose to first place with 68,911 viewers (cumulative 901,927 viewers).
Following these two films, third place went to “The Odyssey” (31,358 viewers, cumulative 11.8147 million viewers), fourth to “Possible Love” (14,417 viewers, cumulative 130,352 viewers), and fifth to *Intern* (12,537 viewers, cumulative 768,591 viewers).
“The Assassin(s),” a highly anticipated film for the Chuseok holiday, is analyzed to have fallen to second place due to criticism over its alleged demonization of President Park Chung-hee. The film revolves around detectives and reporters investigating suspicions that the “higher-ups in the intelligence agency” orchestrated the assassination of First Lady Yuk Young-soo to maintain power. In response, director Heo Jin-ho stated in an interview with this newspaper on the 28th, “The film contains no such depiction, and the claim is rationally impossible.” Hive Media Corp, the production company, also released a statement the same day, clarifying, “The film was not produced with any specific political agenda beyond its original creative intent and nature.”
