Magic seems like harmless entertainment. Perhaps until it happens to you. One woman’s recent Carnival Cruise experience left the internet’s flabbers utterly ghasted.
When Shelby (@sadiebug.xo) posted a seemingly innocuous TikTok that garnered over 245,000 views, it was like sending out a secret signal to her fellow cruisers. Though her video shows an impressive-looking crème brûlée being placed in front of her, she’s not paying attention to the dessert at all. Instead she’s staring with incredulity at the palm of her left hand.
“When someone talks about the Carnival magicians, but I was a VICTIM,” she joked in on-screen caption.
In the background, a crew member is standing with a small smile on his face.
“Figured Out Real Magic”
According to the comments, the magician in the video is “Nanda.” He’s popular and memorable, and he has impressed many cruisers with his uncanny skills.
“He knew what I drew on a piece of paper it don’t sound like much but his back was turned to us, I had 3 other people blocking the view and kept the paper in my hands the whole time and the mfker still got it right idk how he did it,” said liahboo4.
Commenter samanthafisher_22 remembers him too. “OMG he got us too on Celebration! He wrote an ‘X’ on my sister-in-laws upper hand and it ended up on BOTH of ours hands but on the inside of my hand! And my hands were on my lap! So crazy,” she said.
But analeigh.mp3 has a different theory: “I’m convinced some of these mfers figured out real magic and are clowning in our faces.”
What Does It Take To Be A Cruise Ship Magician?
Per a job listing posted by Carnival, the roving musicians are called “table artists,” and are integral to the entire cruise experience. The listing includes the line: “The vacation experience we promise our guests will start with you.”
According to Cruise Passenger, magician Rakesh Syam pioneered tableside magic. ” I was the one to introduce this close up magic concept in the dinning room, it’s the first time in the world for a cruise line,” Syam told the publication.
Syam said he approached Carnival with the idea and they were interested. But it took persistence on his part because they’d never done anything like that before. He begged for a chance and got it. In the first week, he got a great response. And a new cruise ship entertainment position was born.
Now the cruise line has magicians from all over the world performing on its ships. To the delight—and consternation—of travelers.
Is Tableside Magic Different From Other Magic?
Tableside magic is different from theatrical magic because “it is about giving each table a memorable experience within the natural rhythm of the restaurant” Restaurant Magician explains. It’s also designed to feel effortless to the guest but “requires constant awareness from the performer.” That’s because the magician needs to notice everything. From food arriving to waitstaff approaching, to the tables that would rather be left alone. In sum, tableside magic is small, intimate, and ideally elegant.
How is it accomplished? Practice, practice, and patter.
Merchant of Magic reports that in addition to preparing appropriate tableside tricks, magicians should keep the conversation “entertaining or engaging.” The author of that piece, a magician themselves, invests in crisp and elegant props: things like new cards, elegant pens, and custom cards for guests to write their guesses on. He also dresses one notch “smarter” than the guests where he is working. Attention to such details helps create a performance that should delight and surprise guests. All while the magician’s “fingers are doing somersaults whilst from above it looks like nothing is happening.”
This description is arguably a fitting metaphor for a cruise: it takes a lot of expertise to keep travelers comfortable, happy, and relaxed. Meanwhile, to the passenger, it all looks effortless. How’s that for an Abracadabra moment?
