KANO – Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, on Saturday called on the North to respect the principle of power rotation.

Abdulaziz Yari, who spoke shortly after courtesy-visiting the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, stated that the region’s numerical strength should not be used as a basis for insisting on retaining the presidency.

The former Zamfara State governor explained that Nigeria belonged to all its citizens and warned against reducing the contest for the presidency to a struggle between the North and South.

He stressed that national unity must remain the overriding consideration in any political permutations in all circumstances.

According to Yari, the North had enjoyed considerable periods of political leadership since independence and should therefore understand the need to accommodate other regions in the interest of fairness and stability.

He said Nigerians, particularly those in the North, should not assume that having a larger population automatically entitled the region to the presidency, arguing that political power in a diverse federation required compromise and mutual accommodation.

“We shouldn’t be selfish,” Yari said, urging Northerners to understand that leadership of the country was a shared responsibility and not the exclusive preserve of any geographical bloc.

He maintained that the country could only achieve sustainable political stability if its different regions were given a sense of belonging, adding that the rotation of power between the North and South could help strengthen national cohesion.

Yari also cautioned against judging governments solely through political narratives, saying every administration had its strengths and shortcomings.

He further urged Nigerians to examine economic and other measurable indicators when assessing the performance of the present administration.

Defending the government’s record, the APC campaign council chief asked Nigerians to compare the state of the country’s economy and foreign reserves at the beginning of the Tinubu administration with the situation today, saying such indices should form part of the national conversation.

He further appealed to Northerners to support peace and national development rather than allowing regional political interests to deepen divisions, stressing that Nigeria’s challenges in security and the economy required collective efforts from all parts of the country.
