Former conservative Jennifer Rubin is accusing the Republican Party of creating its own political downfall.
Writing for The Contrarian on Thursday, Rubin stated that there is a short list of errors the GOP has committed over the last few decades that have gradually eroded what remained of their party.
First, Rubin outlined, they associated the GOP with their cult leader, blindly supporting his nominees, applauding every policy (regardless of how harmful), providing him with approval for a deeply unpopular war (even though he failed to seek Congress’s input), and overlooking hismental unraveling, and ignoring his significant corruption.”
During President Donald Trump’s second term, he selected loyalists who never said “no” to him, in contrast to many individuals in the initial administration. Granting Trump complete freedom has ultimately led to capricious decisions being turned into policies that are not only extremely unpopular but also harm those connected to them.
Rubin stated that the only setting where this commitment to Trump is effective is in “Republican primaries and areas with strong Republican support.” The outcome has been that “unwavering loyalty to Trump is not something Republicans can promote; it is a significant disadvantage.”
The second point is that the division within the GOP halted any advancement of the Trump agenda. “The dysfunction among Republican lawmakers and their exceptionally low productivity are unprecedented in any recent Congress,” she wrote.
Rubin noted that Democrats have managed to “present the GOP as responsible for ‘massive tax reductions benefiting the wealthy, funded by stripping healthcare from average Americans.’ The Republicans’ most damaging action might have been establishing (and now expanding) a DHS discretionary fund.”
She indicated to the aggressive mass deportation initiative proposed by Trump, which has caused significant negative reaction from Latino voters, a group the GOP was desperately attempting to secure permanently.
Next, there’s the issue of affordability. For a year, Trump and his supporters have desperately attempted to assert that everything is fine and that the problems were merely a “Democrat hoax.”
“By letting Trump implement detrimental policies (such as tariffs, the conflict, and immigration measures), overlooking voters’ economic issues, and not properly enacting laws or performing oversight, Republicans have surrendered the issue of effectiveness/governance,” stated Rubin.
The third issue is that the Republican Party has not fulfilled its pledges to demonstrate that Democrats were engaging in corrupt activities or using government institutions against conservatives. Even with Trump allies in charge of the FBI and the Department of Justice, the administration has been unable to establish any illegal actions. At the same time, unsuccessful attempts to leverage the government against Trump’s opponents have led to discontent among judges and repercussions for pro-Trump prosecutors within the DOJ.
“Their vengeful legal actions have collapsed,” Rubin concluded.
In the background, Trump has only emphasized his own actions. “Republicans have fostered a culture of corruption,” Rubin concluded.
In conclusion, Republicans are seldom questioned about what they have done to merit another term in office. Their well-known loyalty to Trump, poor legislative performance, and acceptance of the widespread corruption all now serve as factors.againstthem, while attempts to divert voters with trivial matters or fabricated ‘scandals’ (such as DEI, transgender athletes, voter fraud, Joe Biden!) have failed,” she concluded. Therefore, as voters head to the polls questioning what the Republicans have accomplished for them recently, the response is “nothing positive at all.”
